What is an Extended Programme?

An Extended Programme provides extra academic support to help students adjust to university-level studies. It includes foundational courses to strengthen key skills, ensuring a smoother transition into the degree.

Requirements

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Extended Program (MBChB-ECP) is reserved for South African Black learners from Quinle 1 and 2
schools who have not previously been engaged in tertiary education and have
not been able to get admission into the six-year SMU medicine degree
program (MBChB). Applicants that do not meet the above criteria are
declined. Only 50 spaces are available on a competitive basis. After completing
the one-year foundation program, students enter the mainstream SMU
MBChB program.

  • Medical Researcher: Contribute to the advancement of medical science by conducting clinical trials, developing new treatments, or studying disease patterns. Medical researchers are employed by universities, pharmaceutical companies, and research institutions.
  • Hospital Administrator: Take on a leadership role within a hospital or healthcare organization, managing staff, coordinating medical services, and overseeing patient care delivery to ensure operational efficiency and high-quality care.
