The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at NWU is the primary professional law degree for practising attorneys and advocates in South Africa, offered at the Mahikeng and Potchefstroom campuses. The four-year programme covers all major fields of South African law including constitutional, criminal, contract, property, family, labour, and commercial law, developing graduates with the analytical, argumentative, and ethical competencies required by the legal profession. The South African legal profession plays a central role in upholding the rule of law, access to justice, and constitutional rights — values central to NWU's LLB programme. Graduates qualify for admission as attorneys or advocates and are eligible to register with the Legal Practice Council of South Africa.

Career Prospects

Attorney – Practise law as an admitted attorney in South Africa, advising and representing clients in civil, criminal, commercial, or family law matters at a private law firm or community advice centre.
Advocate – Appear before South African courts as a member of the Bar, specialising in litigation across constitutional, civil, or commercial matters.
State Advocate (NPA) – Prosecute criminal matters on behalf of the state as a public prosecutor within the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa.
Legal Researcher / Academic – Contribute to legal scholarship, constitutional jurisprudence, or law reform at a South African law school or the South African Law Reform Commission.
Corporate Counsel – Provide in-house legal advisory services on commercial, regulatory, and governance matters at South African corporates, banks, or state-owned enterprises.
