The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) External Bursary Scheme is open for the 2027 academic year, offering full financial support to South African students pursuing undergraduate qualifications in Finance, Management, STEM, Law, and selected postgraduate (Honours) programmes at public universities.

The bursary covers full tuition fees, university or accredited off-campus accommodation, a once-off laptop, a meal allowance, and a transport allowance.

Preference is given to applicants from Quintile 1, 2, and 3 schools, rural and previously disadvantaged communities, and applicants living with a disability. The programme targets students from households with a combined annual income of up to R350 000, though applicants from households earning between R350 000 and R600 000 per year may also be considered subject to an affordability assessment.

Requirements

  • Be a South African citizen aged 26 or younger.
  • Be unemployed at the time of application.
  • Study or intend to study full-time at a South African public university or university of technology.
  • Be studying towards a first undergraduate qualification. Postgraduate funding is only available for Honours in Law, Accounting (CA), Actuarial Science, and Mathematics & Statistics.
  • Matriculants must have a minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 75%.
  • Current tertiary students must have a minimum average of 65% in their most recent results and maintain a 60% GPA throughout their studies.
  • Household combined annual income must not exceed R350 000 (applicants up to R600 000 may apply for affordability consideration).
  • Eligible fields of study — Finance, Management & Other: Accounting (CA), Financial Management, Internal Audit, Cost and Management Accounting, Investment Management, Risk Management, Transport or Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship, Finance Studies, Economics, Econometrics, Business Management, Financial Accounting, Financial Engineering.
  • Eligible fields of study — STEM: Industrial, Chemical, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic, Mining, Metallurgy, and Civil/Construction/Quantity Survey Engineering; Analytical Chemistry; Agricultural Studies; Geology; Actuarial Science; Data Science; Environmental Science; Quantitative Risk Management; Physics; Bachelor of Sciences; Biotechnology; Mathematics or Statistics; Computer Science / Information Science; BCom Information Systems; Information Technology.
  • Eligible fields of study — Law: BCom Law (Commercial Law), Bachelor of Law (LLB), Diploma in Law Studies.
  • Eligible fields of study — Postgraduate Honours: Law qualifications, Mathematics or Statistics, Actuarial Science, Accounting CTA.
  • Compulsory documents (all certifications must be no older than 3 months):
    • Recently certified South African ID document.
    • 2026 mid-year (first semester) results, or latest results if not currently studying.
    • Matric certificate (if completed).
    • 2026 matriculants must submit Grade 11 results and June 2026 results.
    • Proof of parents’ or guardians’ combined household income: recent certified payslip(s) and 3-month bank statements if employed; affidavit stating annual income and 6-month bank statement if unemployed or self-employed; SASSA letter if applicable; death certificates if parents are deceased.
    • Recently certified ID copies for both parents or guardians.
    • Divorce certificate or sworn statement if parents are divorced or separated.
    • Recently certified proof of residence.
