Life Orientation and APS at NWU

If you are applying to North-West University (NWU), one of the first steps is calculating your Admission Point Score (APS). This score helps determine whether you qualify for admission into your chosen programme. A common question applicants ask is whether Life Orientation contributes to the APS.

At NWU, Life Orientation is not included when calculating APS. Although it is a compulsory subject in high school and important for personal development, it does not add points toward your admission requirements.

How APS is Calculated at NWU

NWU works out your APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means:

  • Core subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Economics, Life Sciences, or Languages will count towards your score.
  • Each programme has its own subject and APS requirements, so always check the faculty-specific criteria for your chosen qualification.

What This Means for Applicants

When applying to NWU:

  • Do not include Life Orientation in your APS calculation.
  • Focus on achieving strong results in your other subjects, as these are what will determine your eligibility.
  • Ensure you meet both the minimum APS and the specific subject requirements for the qualification you want to study.
