Life Orientation and APS at NMU

If you are applying to Nelson Mandela University (NMU), one of the most important factors in your application is your Admission Point Score (APS). This score determines whether you qualify for admission into a particular programme. Many applicants ask if Life Orientation contributes to the APS at NMU.

At NMU, Life Orientation is not included in the APS calculation. Although it is a compulsory subject in high school, it is not counted when determining your admission points for university entry.

How APS is Calculated at NMU

NMU calculates your APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means that:

  • Your core academic subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, or Languages will determine your APS.
  • Each programme may have subject-specific requirements, so you should always check the entry criteria for your chosen course.

What This Means for Applicants

When applying to NMU:

  • DO NOT include Life Orientation in your APS calculation.
  • Ensure you meet both the minimum APS and the required subjects for your programme.
  • Focus on achieving strong marks in your other subjects, as these are the ones that will impact your admission chances.
