How Life Orientation Affects Your APS at CPUT

When applying to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), many students wonder how their subjects will be counted toward their Admission Point Score (APS). The APS is an important factor in determining whether you meet the entry requirements for your chosen qualification.

At CPUT, Life Orientation is not included when calculating your APS. While the subject is compulsory in high school and plays a role in developing essential life skills, it does not contribute to the points used for university admission.

How APS is Calculated at CPUT

CPUT calculates your APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means that:

  • The other subjects you have written in your NSC/Matric exams will carry more weight.
  • Your APS will be determined based on the marks you achieve in subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, or Languages, depending on the qualification you are applying for.

What This Means for You

If you are planning to apply at CPUT:

  • DO NOT count Life Orientation in your APS calculation.
  • Focus on achieving strong results in your core subjects, as these will directly impact your eligibility.
  • Always check the specific admission requirements for the course you are applying for, since different faculties may prioritise certain subjects.
