The Chinese Government Scholarship offers South African students the opportunity to pursue fully funded undergraduate, postgraduate, or non-degree studies in China. The DHET oversees the nomination of candidates for this prestigious programme. Applicants may study in a wide range of fields, with undergraduate programmes taught in Chinese and postgraduate programmes taught in English. Shortlisted candidates will complete a second application phase through the CSC portal in November 2025.

What the Scholarship Covers:
Chinese Government:

  • Tuition (RMB 20,000–45,000/year)
  • Accommodation (RMB 8,400–12,000/year)
  • Monthly stipend (RMB 30,000–42,000/year)
  • Medical insurance (RMB 800/year)

South African Government (DHET):

  • Return & midterm economy airfare
  • Monthly living allowance
  • One-off settlement allowance
  • Visa costs
  • Pre-departure orientation and support

Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen in good health
  • Must have a strong academic record (minimum 60% average)
  • Must be available to begin studies in China in September 2026
  • Must show interest in China and a commitment to South Africa’s development

Education Requirements and Age Limits:

  • Chinese language (non-degree): NSC (≥60%), under age 35
  • Bachelor’s: NSC (≥60%), under age 25
  • Master’s: Bachelor’s degree, under age 35
  • PhD: Master’s degree, under age 40

Fields of Study (Priority):

  • Agriculture, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Environment & Climate Change, Engineering, Food Science
  • Hydrogeological Engineering, Maritime Studies, Space Science & Technology, Telecommunications
  • Natural & Physical Sciences, Nuclear & Renewable Energy, Chinese Language Studies
