The Bachelor of Science (General) at Wits is a three-year degree offering students flexibility to explore and combine disciplines across the natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science before committing to a specialisation. All applicants must write the National Benchmark Tests. Students choose from disciplines spanning the mathematical, physical, earth, and biological sciences, building a strong scientific foundation that can be directed towards postgraduate study or a broad range of careers in research, industry, and government. The general BSc is ideal for students who have a strong scientific aptitude but wish to explore their interests before specialising at honours level.

Science Teacher – Teaches natural sciences at South African high schools after completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), addressing the critical shortage of qualified science educators.
Environmental Scientist – Conducts baseline studies, monitoring, and impact assessments for South African environmental consulting firms serving the mining, infrastructure, and agriculture sectors.
Research Technician – Supports academic and industrial research programmes at South African universities, the CSIR, and private research organisations across chemistry, biology, and physics.
Science Communicator – Translates complex scientific concepts for public audiences through journalism, museum education, science festivals, and digital media, promoting scientific literacy in South Africa.
