The Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Knowledge Systems at NWU's Mahikeng campus is a four-year degree that explores and documents the traditional ecological, agricultural, medicinal, and cultural knowledge of South Africa's indigenous communities. Students study ethnobotany, traditional medicine, indigenous food systems, and knowledge management within a rigorous scientific framework, developing the skills to validate, preserve, and apply indigenous knowledge for South Africa's benefit. The programme aligns with South Africa's National Policy on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and contributes to the global movement recognising the scientific value of traditional knowledge. Career Prospects

Indigenous Knowledge Researcher – Document and analyse traditional ecological and medicinal knowledge for South African universities, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), or the CSIR.
Traditional Medicine Regulatory Officer – Support SAHPRA’s regulation of complementary and alternative medicines incorporating indigenous health products and traditional practices.
Community Knowledge Manager – Work with South African communities to document, protect, and commercialise indigenous knowledge systems and traditional resources under bioprospecting regulations.
Conservation and Heritage Officer – Integrate indigenous knowledge into ecosystem management and cultural heritage programming at South African national parks or UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Policy Adviser (IKS) – Contribute to policy development on indigenous intellectual property, bioprospecting, and knowledge governance for the DSI or international bodies such as WIPO.
