What is Project Y?

Founded in 2023 by Felix Anthonj & Nesh Govender, Project Y is a membership platform that empowers young African talent from underserved communities by providing access to education, job opportunities, and financial support.

Key Pillars of Project Y

Project Y's comprehensive program is built on several key pillars:

  • Education: Project Y offers rigorous training programs in high-demand fields, with a current focus on software development. These programs are designed by industry experts and delivered through a blend of online learning, hands-on projects, and personalized mentorship.
  • Capital: Recognizing that financial constraints can hinder personal and professional growth, Project Y provides living stipends between R4000 (for the first 6 months) and R6000 thereafter until you get employment or up to two years to cover essential expenses during the training period. This allows members to fully dedicate themselves to their studies without the added burden of financial worries.
  • Resources: In addition to financial support, Project Y offers a laptop for the duration of your contract with them and some other materials should you need them however you should note that this increases the duration of your contract/payment plan with them to 6 years (72 months). If you do not require the laptop or other resources your contract period with them is around 4 years (48 months).
  • Support: Beyond technical training, Project Y emphasizes holistic development. Members receive coaching, mentorship, and career guidance to navigate the job market, build professional networks, and achieve their career aspirations.
  • Community: Project Y fosters a vibrant and supportive community of learners from diverse backgrounds. This global network provides opportunities for collaboration, peer learning, and mutual support, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

The Software Development Program

Currently, Project Y's flagship offering is its Software Development Program. This intensive program equips members with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the ever-evolving tech industry. The program covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Web Development: Front-end and back-end technologies, enabling members to build dynamic and interactive websites and applications.

How Does the Program Work?

The journey with Project Y typically involves the following steps:

  1. Application: Interested individuals apply to join a specific training cohort. The application process involves an assessment to evaluate their aptitude, motivation, and commitment.
  2. Acceptance: Successful applicants are accepted into the program and assigned to a cohort.
  3. Training: Members embark on an intensive training journey, combining online learning with practical projects, mentorship, and collaborative learning experiences. One thing to note is that members will be required to be at a Project Y hub with the two current hubs being in Cape Town (in Longkloof, Gardens) and Johannesburg (in Sandton) having its largest current cohort. They have expressed that they are looking to expand their location networks for future cohorts.
  4. Job Placement: Project Y provides dedicated support in securing job placements after graduation, leveraging its industry connections and career services to connect members with potential employers. Typically, some members gain employment within 6 months from graduation but this is only based on its first-ever cohort.
  5. Income Sharing: Once employed, members share a percentage of their income for a defined period, typically 15% for 4-6 years. This income-sharing model allows Project Y to reinvest in future cohorts and continue its mission of expanding access to opportunity.

Who is Project Y For?

Project Y is ideally suited for individuals who are:

  • Passionate about technology: Driven to learn new skills and build a career in the tech industry.
