The Humanities Extended Curriculum at UKZN (Howard College and Pietermaritzburg) is a four-year access programme that provides an alternative pathway into the BSocSc degree for students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds who demonstrate academic potential despite not meeting standard admission requirements. Available exclusively to applicants from Quintile 1 and 2 schools, the programme extends the standard three-year degree by spreading first-year learning over two years, with additional academic literacy and critical thinking support. Successful completion leads to the standard BSocSc qualification, opening the same career pathways as mainstream humanities and social science graduates.
