The Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at UCT is a four-year specialist degree offered by the Michaelis School of Fine Art, one of the oldest and most prestigious art schools on the African continent. The programme provides intensive, interdisciplinary studio training in painting, sculpture, photography, print media, and new media, alongside rigorous critical and theoretical engagement with the history and discourse of contemporary art — particularly in its African dimensions. Students work in well-equipped studios and graduate by producing a professional body of work for their final-year exhibition. Michaelis has produced many of South Africa's most celebrated artists and curators, and its graduates are represented in major South African and international collections. Portfolio submission is the leading criterion for admission and is weighted more heavily than the APS.
