Overview/Details

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture invites undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for bursaries to pursue heritage-related studies at accredited South African institutions. The bursary promotes the preservation of South Africa’s cultural, historical, and indigenous knowledge systems by supporting relevant academic disciplines.

Bursary Covers (Maximum Value: R110,000 per student):

  • Full tuition and study fees
  • Prescribed books
  • Electronic device (max R10,000)
  • Accommodation (max R50,000, if applicable)
  • Meals (max R18,500, if applicable)
  • Transport (max R10,000, if applicable)

Note: Funds are paid directly to the institution

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens
  • Be 40 years old or younger
  • Be full-time students at a recognised DHET-accredited institution
  • Maintain a minimum academic average of 65%
  • Be pursuing studies in heritage-related fields (see below)
  • Not be employed full-time (if employed, gross income must be R130,000 or less per annum)
  • Not receive funding from other bursaries or donors

Qualifying Fields of Study:

  • Physical and Biological Anthropology
  • Archaeology (incl. Maritime & Underwater Cultural Heritage)
  • Geography and Geomatics Sciences (Postgrad focus: Cartography, GIS)
  • Archives and Records Management
  • Library and Information Sciences
  • Conservation of the Built Environment (Postgrad)
  • Heritage and Museum Studies (Management, Curatorship, Preservation)
  • Palaeontology
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS)
  • History
  • Digitisation of Heritage Resources

International Studies (Postgraduate Only):

  • Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage
  • Digital Archaeology
  • Heritage Conservation and Preservation

Required Documents:

  • Certified copy of South African ID (not older than 3 months)
  • Provisional acceptance or proof of registration (on institution letterhead)
  • Certified Matric certificate
  • Latest certified academic transcript or progress report
  • Certified proof of income or affidavit from parents/guardians
  • Certified recent payslips (if applicable)
  • Proof of disability (if applicable)
  • Affidavit confirming authenticity of salary slips
