Details

The Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of Pretoria is a three-year degree in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences that trains students in the scientific study of Earth's materials, structures, processes, and history — from rock formation and plate tectonics to mineral deposits and geological hazards. Geology is fundamental to South Africa's world-leading mining sector, which depends on geologists to find, characterise, and develop ore deposits. Students develop expertise in mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and field mapping — combining rigorous theory with extensive fieldwork in South Africa's geological diversity. The programme is accredited by the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and equips graduates for careers in mining, environmental management, and research.

Admission requirements: English (Home or First Additional Language): Level 5 (60-69%); Mathematics: Level 6 (70-79%); Physical Science: Level 6 (70-79%); APS: 34 (excluding Life Orientation).
