The Bachelor of Science in Genetics / Human Genetics at the University of Pretoria is a three-year degree in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences that provides a scientific foundation in the study of genes, heredity, and genetic variation — from molecular genetics and genomics to population genetics and genetic counselling principles. Students develop expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, genetic analysis, and the medical, agricultural, and evolutionary dimensions of genetics. Human genetics is a rapidly evolving field with enormous medical relevance, particularly in South Africa's context of high HIV prevalence, specific inherited disorders in its diverse populations, and growing demand for genetic testing and counselling services. Graduates are equipped for careers in medical genetics, agricultural breeding, biotechnology, and research.
