The Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences at Wits provides comprehensive training in the study of Earth's structure, composition, and processes, with particular relevance to South Africa's extraordinary mineral endowment. All applicants must write the National Benchmark Tests. The programme covers mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, and economic geology, providing the foundation for careers in mineral exploration, mining, environmental geoscience, and research. South Africa is host to some of the world's most significant mineral deposits including the Bushveld Complex — the world's largest platinum, palladium, and chromite deposit — making geoscience one of the most economically vital disciplines in the country.

Mine Geologist – Manages geological data, ore grade control, and resource estimation at operating mines for companies including Anglo American, Sibanye-Stillwater, and South32.
Engineering Geologist – Assesses geological hazards and ground conditions for civil engineering, mining, and infrastructure projects across South Africa.
Environmental Geologist – Investigates contamination, acid mine drainage, and groundwater impacts for South African mining operations, supporting rehabilitation and regulatory compliance.
Geological Researcher – Conducts academic and applied research in geoscience at South African universities, the CGS (Council for Geoscience), and international research institutions.
