Medical Doctor – Provides clinical care across all populations in South Africa’s public and private healthcare sectors after completing a two-year internship and one year of community service, registered with the HPCSA.
Specialist Physician – Completes postgraduate training in a medical specialty (surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, etc.) to provide advanced clinical care at South African tertiary and specialist hospitals.
Medical Researcher – Conducts biomedical and clinical research at Wits, the MRC, or NICD, contributing to South Africa’s response to HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and non-communicable diseases.
Public Health Medicine Specialist – Leads community health programmes, epidemic responses, and health system strengthening initiatives for South African government and international organisations.
Academic Clinician – Combines clinical practice with teaching and research at Wits or another South African medical school, training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
