The Bachelor of Architectural Studies at UCT is a three-year design-focused foundational degree that builds the creative, critical, and technical foundations necessary for a career in architecture and the built environment. Offered by UCT's School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics — one of Africa's most distinguished architecture schools — the programme develops the capacity to solve complex design problems imaginatively, to think rationally about space and environment, and to exercise appropriate professional judgement. South Africa's acute housing shortage, spatial inequality, and climate vulnerability make architectural skills more socially important than ever, and UCT's programme emphasises contextually appropriate design for African settings. A portfolio of creative work is a mandatory component of the application and is weighted heavily in admissions decisions. Graduates may register with SACAP as Candidate Architectural Technologists and are eligible to continue into BAS Honours and the professional Master of Architecture.
