Details

The MBChB at Stellenbosch University is a six-year professional degree that trains doctors to diagnose, treat, and manage human illness across all the major organ systems. The programme progresses from foundational biomedical sciences in the early years through to full clinical rotations at Tygerberg Hospital — one of the largest teaching hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa — and affiliated facilities across the Western Cape. South Africa faces a critical shortage of medical practitioners, with a doctor-to-patient ratio well below the WHO recommended level, making each graduating cohort of approximately 280 doctors a meaningful contribution to the country's public and private health systems. Graduates complete two years of internship and one year of community service before registering independently with the HPCSA.

Career Prospects

  • Medical Doctor (General Practitioner) completing internship and community service to register with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner — working in South Africa’s public clinics, district hospitals, or private general practice.
  • Medical Specialist pursuing postgraduate registrar training in surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatry, or another field at South African academic hospitals, gaining specialist registration with the HPCSA.
  • Public Health Specialist contributing to communicable disease surveillance, health systems strengthening, and population health programmes for the National Department of Health, provincial health departments, or organisations such as the WHO and MSF.
  • Academic Clinician combining clinical practice with medical research at Stellenbosch University, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), or affiliated institutions — contributing to HIV, TB, and NCDs research that directly shapes South African health policy.
  • Rural District Doctor serving under-resourced communities through South Africa’s community service programme and public sector employment, where the need for medical practitioners is greatest and the clinical scope of practice is broadest.
