The DWS External Bursary Programme offers comprehensive support for previously disadvantaged and financially needy South African students pursuing qualifications in water and sanitation-related fields. The bursary covers full tuition, accommodation, meals, books, and a personal allowance. Upon graduation, bursars are expected to join the Water Learning Academy for a maximum of three years.

Approved Universities Include:
University of Pretoria, UKZN, UCT, UFS, UWC, Stellenbosch, Wits, UJ, UNIVEN, Rhodes, Fort Hare, NWU, Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, TUT, DUT, CPUT, VUT, University of Zululand, University of Mpumalanga, Sol Plaatje University.

Bursary Coverage:

  • Full tuition and registration
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Book allowance
  • Personal annual allowance

Bursary Obligations:

  • 4-year service contract post-graduation within DWS
  • No double funding (e.g., NSFAS and DWS simultaneously)

Requirements

  • South African citizenship
  • Must have passed Grade 12 and been accepted at one of 21 listed South African universities
  • Targeted at previously disadvantaged and rural community members; students with disabilities encouraged to apply
  • Must apply for specific water-related qualifications
  • Cannot hold multiple bursaries – must choose between DWS and any other funding

  • BSc/BEng: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering
  • BSc: Hydrology, Geohydrology, Environmental Management, Water Project Management, Environmental & Water Sciences
  • BSc Honours: Hydrology, Geohydrology, Environmental & Water Sciences
  • Diplomas/National Diplomas/BEng Tech: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current), Water Care
